Travel: Augsburg and the best sandwich ever

I recently went to Munich (ok, it was a while ago, but I just noticed this in my drafts box…). As far as countries in which to eat authentic food, I routinely put Germany at the bottom of the list. I went with a few other folks who like to eat (big thanks to Matt, Dave and Dan for being good sports and letting me dissect their food before they ate it – usually cold…).
We did get our share of traditional schnitzel, bratwurst, and sauerbraten, but overall I was quite pleasantly surprised with the freshness of the food. I could go on and on about the great food, fabulous food/tour guides and wonderful country, (I’ll spare you from looking through all the photos) but will only highlight what could be the best sandwich ever.
It was early morning in Augsburg (about 45 minutes from Munich). I can honestly say that it’s the best sandwich ever because we were stuffed from just having finished breakfast. Were walking around the town and this sandwich called my name through the glass. We all know when we’ve had the “BEST (fill in the blank) ever” and then when you go back for the same experience, the taste isn’t quite the same. Then you remember that you were starving and would have gladly given your right arm for some bread and a little bit of olive oil. In short, the sandwich lived up to my expectations. The ingredients were simple, the pretzel bread freshly baked, red pepper, arugula, grapes and best of all – creamy brie.
So the true test I came home and promptly made my own version of the sandwich. I would say it was 80% as good as the original (giving 20% to the company and the atmosphere). Overall difficulty rating would probably be a wedge, as it’s kind of a pill to make the bread. If you were to purchase bread, this sandwich is very easy, but all about getting fresh, quality ingredients.
This sandwich was so good that Dan convinced me to document the experience:
. As you can see, I won’t be taking the place of Rachel Ray anytime soon…
So here is my question to you….What is your favorite thing that you have eaten while traveling?

So my favorite thing to eat while traveling was in Italy. I went to an enoteca which is mainly for wine tasting, but you can order little plates to cleanse your palate. So I piled a kind of prosciutto thing, cheese, walnut, apricot and drizzled with honey. Yum! Also, I had a stomach problem in Guatemala and started eating only McDonald’s Happy Meals (cajita feliz!) – the cajita feliz always stayed in my stomach without incident.
