Why do I cook in heels?

So people ask me all the time if I really cook in heels.  If you’ve ever been in my kitchen, you can undoubtedly vouch that I really do cook in heels.  I also recently helped a friend move to a third floor apartment and wore heels (in hind sight it was pretty stupid though because it was icy, but the heels did help act as a type of ice pick…)  I wear heels when we go to tradeshows and I’m on my feet all day.  I don’t wear heels, however, when my feet are cold or there is deep snow and I’m just going to the grocery – those days are reserved for one of mypairs of Ugg boots.

Shoes

I have traced this behavior back to two major things:

  • 1 – Both my parents, all of my aunts and uncles, 12 of 14 cousins, and three of my four grandparents are all over six feet tall.  In order to compete with my less height challenged (and younger) cousins, I started wearing heels in high school.  In case you’re counting, that leaves my sister, one cousin (Audrey) and one grandparent bringing up the caboose.
  • 1b – A sub point of point one – being only 5′5″, if I spend any amount of time in the kitchen not wearing heels, my shoulders are killing me at the end of the day.  I found that if I wear heels, my shoulders are fine at the end of the day since I don’t have to hold my arms up.
  • 2 – Heels are cute.  Yes, there are cute flat shoes, and I do own a few pair, however, I rarely prefer flats to heels.
  • 3 – Heels are comfy.  I guess I can attribute the “comfiness” to having to run in heels to prepare for danceteam competitions.  I wear them all day at tradeshows, to the mall and when I need an extra boost of confidence.
  • 4 – When you buy pants, you make a commitment to a certain height of shoe.  If your jeans fit perfectly with flats, you can’t wear your jeans with heels and vice versa (unless you’re in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants).

Here’s a dorky photo someone took during a recent party.  As always,  I chose the shoes first, then the outfit…  Have a great pair of bright red heels I’m wearing for a do this weekend, even if it’s snowing.  Now if I can just find the right outfit…
